EDJBA Club Requirements re Child Safety (in association with EDJBA Child Safety Policy)

  • All clubs must have a Child Safety policy and a Child Safety officer. The name of the Child Safety Officer is to be provided in the club’s Season Entry Agreement
  • The Basketball Victoria Child Safeguarding Code of Conduct must be provided to all coaches, parents/carers and administrators

Basketball Victoria have provided the following advice for domestic competitions, which must be complied with by clubs.

Reference checks / interviews

  • Coaches who are parents or relatives of a player do not need to be interviewed or have reference checks
  • Coaches who are over 18 and not related to a player in a team should have a reference check done the first time they coach – no need to interview
  • Junior referees (under 18) do not need to be interviewed or have reference checks
  • Referees coming from another association should have a reference check done
  • New venue managers should be reference checked if not well known to the club

Working with Children’s Checks and Screening

  • All coaches, officials, supervisors, committee members and other personnel who are likely by their task to have unsupervised individual contact with participants under the age of 18 must comply with Basketball Victoria screening requirements
  • Basketball Victoria screening requirements require a Working with Children Check (unless exempt such as registered teacher or police) and signing of the Basketball Victoria Member Protection statutory declaration
  • In addition to having a record of Working with Children Card (WWCC) details, clubs should check the validity of the WWCC details (including those provided in PlayHQ) with Services Victoria (can be done online, with card details batched in a spreadsheet)

Registration in PlayHQ

  • All persons registered in PlayHQ should be required to accept the club’s terms and conditions, which should reference compliance with Basketball Victoria Codes of Conduct, the club Child Safety policy and the Basketball Victoria Child Safeguarding Code of Conduct

Coach registration in PlayHQ

  • All coaches must be registered in PlayHQ, and should provide their Working with Children’s details in PlayHQ if over 18
  • Coaches should be required to accept the club’s terms and conditions, which should reference compliance with Basketball Victoria Codes of Conduct, the club Child Safety policy and the Basketball Victoria Child Safeguarding Code of Conduct
